Weekly Photo Challenge: Monument

Published by

on

In this week’s challenge, show us your take on a monument (broadly defined). It could be a fresh angle on a well-known tourist site, or a place nobody knows outside your community— anything can be monumental as long as it’s imbued with a shared sense of importance.

Ben – The Daily Post

Monument

The Space Needle has to be one of the most photographed monuments in the Pacific Northwest and whenever I’m at Seattle Center I can’t resist snapping my fair share of pictures but along with the typical tourist shots I always try to capture a new angle so I can share a view of Seattle most of my readers haven’t seen before.

This image is from the bottom of a steep stairway outside the Experience Music Project Museum.  EMP’s curvy siding is visible on the left, the Space Needle is front and center and at the top of the stairs is a poster of Seattle native Jimi Hendrix.  Three monuments in one shot!

The Needle is, I think, the most iconic structure on the West coast. I don’t think there’s a structure with the same impact until you get to the Arch in St. Louis.

      Narble,

I would have to agree for tall structures but the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco is pretty amazing. Then there is the Golden Gate Bridge. Speaking of the St. Louis Arch…I stumped many reader with this image.

I conveniently forgot the Golden Gate. 🙂 But The Space Needle is right there. That is a great image of the Arch.

I’m amazed by the fact the sun is right next to the Space Needle. Not an easy picture to capture. I remember visiting the Space Needle in 1974 on a family trip to the World’s Fair in Spokane. Fond memories.

I’m glad you made it up north to visit, especially when the Seattle Center was still pretty new. The sun was so bright this afternoon my eyes were watering and I just aimed my phone up and shot. It was sheer luck that everything lined up correctly because I could barely see. 🙂

You may be right Jim, the Needle is certainly one of the most recognized structures in the west.

Yes, this must be a popular place to photograph, because I’ve seen a lot of photos of the Space Needle lately. What is it used for?

Tourists can ride the glass elevators up the outside of the structure for an amazing view of the city and there is a rotating restaurant at the very top inside the big circle shape. The city also decorates the top for special events and activities and it is a main spot for fireworks on the 4th of July and New Year’s Eve. A big gathering spot for tourists and locals and definitely a photo opportunity. 🙂

I had fun wandering the streets of Seattle in March. Did you by any chance see the ones I took of the Space Needle?

When we visited Seattle, I saw a brochure that promised to help photographers get the ‘right’ shots of the Space Needle, which I thought was a terrible idea. Those are the images on postcards (predictable and a bit dull) – much prefer to look for an individual angle, like you have, Lisa!

I agree with all who commented on the perspective you gave the Space Needle! Outstanding shot. It’s fun when something familiar takes on a new twist. We love coming North, up from Portland:)
