Weekly Photo Challenge: Containers

From “Don’t judge a book by its cover” to “Don’t look at the jug, but at what it contains” (an old Rabbinic saying), we’re constantly taught that the contents of things are more important than the vessels, wrappers, and boxes that hold them in place. This week, let’s give outer shells their due and focus our lenses on things that contain other things.

Container

Our yard is always full of birds flying around, digging for dinner, taking baths and singing to each other but this year we’ve also hosted several new families of  very talented Robins.  This nest was tucked away below a deck beam until the babies hatched and were strong enough to fly away on their own.  Then, I found the first nest on the ground and a new one resting in its place.  Did a second family push them out and claim the perch for their own or do Robins build new homes for each set of eggs?  I’ll check the ground again soon to see if a third nest and family moves in…

A beautiful nest! You are lucky to have it now that the robins are done with it! (Empty nest syndrome!)

Perfect photos for this week’s challenge. A bird’s nest is a container with ever-changing contents. The nests are just made out of twigs but I’m always surprised how they can safely hold quite a few eggs without falling apart. I really like how there’s a sizable leaf in the middle of this one – sort of like a cushion for the birds to sit on 🙂

I’d think they might want to reuse some and spare the extra work but apparently they all want to start from scratch. 🙂

It’s days like this that make me happy I take lots of photos without knowing immediately what I’ll do with them. Usually there is something waiting in my archives that will fit with a new challenge. 🙂

Robins used to make nests at the top of one of two posts on my front porch. Unfortunately, it was right under my daughter’s window, and once the babies had hatched, the noise they’d make was enough to drive her teenaged self crazy. Like white-hot ball of rage, crazy. 🙂 Because she is grandpa’s little princess, my FIL put some metal flashing on a slant so that it’s impossible to build a nest now (the material comes sliding off). So, no more nests for the past few years. Such a diva.

I think their little cheeps are sweet but the sound is muted being below our deck. Outside of my window might be a completely different story. 🙂

In fairness, it was very loud – and at a godawful hour in the morning. 🙂
