Phoneography and Non-SLR Digital Photo Challenge: Black & White (Post Alley)

While the tourist attraction part of this stretch of Post Alley makes me squirm (chewing gum stuck to the walls) I can’t seem to stop looking for new photo opportunities each time I visit Seattle’s Pike Place Market.  Last Friday I was drawn to  the bright winter light and how each group of people spent so much time staring at old pieces of gum…

Fantastic light. That really why you’re drawn there. I don’t think it’s the gum.

You’re right, Jim. I love the light but really don’t like the gum…

It looks about as old a town building as you guys might have, Lisa: is that the case ?
    Lovely B&W, btw …

There is an older part of Seattle below this alley, M-R and if you want to read a little about the history this link to Wikipedia is pretty accurate: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Underground
Maybe John and Ryan will come with me on a tour soon. 🙂

Love, love this in B&W, Lisa. I still shake my head every time you post a shot of the gum wall because I can’t believe I had never heard of it in all my visits to Seattle. Next time!

Next time, Nancy! I’ll have another photo from this area at the end of the month when Meg’s Take 12 Project goes up at Move the Chair. She invited 12 photographers to each take 12 photos on 12/12 and the group exhibit will be posted on her blog 12/28. I’ll be sure to let everyone know when it’s ready. 🙂

What Nancy said! Fancy us having missed such a … unique tourist attraction! How can something so gross look so good :V

It really is pretty gross, Sukie. 🙂 I look from a distance but plenty of people have no problem touching and adding their own gum. Eew!

When I saw the photo, I thought this was a small town in Europe some where. I hope to get to Seattle one day next year. Great photo!

The light gives this kind of a creepy and menacing look. It’s not just the gum! Love the texture of the bricks and the pipes above.

Thanks, D’Arcy. I like all the textures and old bricks too plus without color the gum doesn’t look so icky. 🙂

Lisa, nicely captured urban setting. Alley ways are intriguing, especially with the way that you caught the light’s power to shed itself on everything in its reach. Happy Photo Challenge.

I recognized this photo right away, because I was in Seattle twice in November. Visited the “Gum Wall” in Post Alley both times. It looks better in black and white as you’ve shown it. 🙂

what a great click. have heard much about this place, and am here frequently enough but have never found Post Alley. where is it in relation to the market? would love to see this one day, as gross as it is 🙂

Post Alley runs diagonally through the area, Kris and this section is on the south side below market level. There is a flight of stairs close to the bronze pig, Rachel that will take you down to the ghost tour meeting place and gum wall.
