A Surprise Every Day: Shaking Up August With Hipstamatic (week 2)

This set of seven photos reminds me one more time that interesting things really can be found in the middle of a regular day.  I started this random photo-of-the-day project during a dreary February week and here I am, six months later, still looking forward to going outside and finding something new every morning.  Since we’ve passed the half way point I think I’ll keep the series running until February 2016 and finish the year with a fun collection of images documenting of how I really spent my time.  Not just the highs and lows that live in our digital photo albums but the daily experiences that we think we’ll remember but always end up forgetting.

Sunday evening found Finn and I enjoying a quiet moment in the backyard as the sun started to come down and Monday evening I visited my favorite massage therapist for a bit of post-hiking rest and relaxation.  Tuesday morning I found this sad little tree leaning away from a deep set of tire tracks and Wednesday morning I found this poor watermelon blown to bits by a handful of firecrackers.  Do you think the same people who knocked down the tree blew up the watermelon?

Thursday’s photo is of our vine maples turning color weeks earlier than usual due to this stressful season of high temps and no water but Friday brought some much-needed rain to the Seattle area!  Lego Star Wars fans might recognize General Grievous’ Flagship, The Malevolence and Ryan’s latest Lego creation is the subject of Saturday’s photo.

Each photo was taken with my iPhone 6 using Hipstamatic’s “shake to randomize” function then posted without any additional editing. If you like a particular combination and want to try it at home just click on the image to see the lens and filter used.  For variety I continue to add new lenses and filters so if you want to try Hipstamatic but are unsure how to start let me know and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.

Your project is worthy for exactly your reasoning: You’ll have a visual record of the everyday that becomes more than mundane. It is our life where the ordinary can become extraordinary.

The everyday is where we spend most of our time and it’s my goal to do a better job of enjoying it. Thanks for your comments today, Sally.

I leave for Atlanta early tomorrow morning. 😦 Maybe I’ll get one while I’m there, actually. I have a feeling I’ll need it by end of day tomorrow.

Thanks, Joanne. He’s a cutie and sometimes sits still long enough for a quick photo. 🙂

It feels pretty huge now that I’m trying to find a place to display it in the house too. 🙂 Yikes!

Thanks, Amy! Finn loves to sit outside and sniff the air when wind from the ocean reaches our part of the hill every evening. If I’m quick with the camera I get a shot like this one. 🙂

I keep meaning to try some of the new photo apps. In addition to Hipstamatic, have you ever used Hueless or Snapseed ?

Is Finn named after the dog from the ‘Finn the Wolfhound’ book ?

Snapseed is my #1 favorite app, Peter followed closely by Hipstamatic. I also enjoy Hueless and you might want to try VSCO Cam as well. Finn is actually named after a character in the Cartoon Network show Adventure Time but now I want to look for a copy of Finn the Wolfhound. 🙂

It’s by Alec John Dawson. It’s an old children’s book, from the early 1900’s. The original version is at least 300 pages, it is often abridged to 150 or so pages.

The definitive Finn portrait! He looks like an old Scottish gentleman. I’ve noticed the trees turning early, too. Everything bloomed early, and now it’s dying early from stress. I agree, the ordinary moments are important to capture. Think how many days we remember nothing about!

I know, D’Arcy! It makes me feel bad when a week goes by and I start to forget the little things. Hopefully this helps for at least one year. 🙂

Your dog is named for Finn the Human? awesome!

Yes he is Sukie. 🙂 Adventure Time is one of John and Ryan’s favorite shows to watch together. 🙂 Our Finn had a different name when we rescued him but he cringed every time we used it. A reminder of the bad days I think. 😦 This one made him happy and it’s much nicer to say!

I’ve watched a few episodes with my youngest son – he’s a big fan, and I like weird! Your Finn looks much happier now.:)

It’s nice to hear you’re enjoying my daily shots, Jo. My fear is that I’m boring readers with my look at life but it’s been a fun experiment and I’m looking forward to having a detailed record of this year. 🙂

It’s like a photo diary, isn’t it? And blogging is meant to be fun, so why not 🙂

Finn looks kind of noble from that angle. I wonder if he’s a scamp the rest of the time?

Scamp is a polite word for his daily attitude. 😉 Really though he’s a great dog that has come a long way from the terrified rescue we adopted last fall. Thanks for your visit today!

This really is a great idea for a project that documents your day to day life. I was just commenting on another blog that if I didn’t put the date and place on a photo that I took years ago, believing I would always remember the day, I now sometimes forget the where and when. Thankfully, I can still remember who. The first photo is my favorite – It is beautiful and your dog really looks like he is enjoying the sunset. 🙂

Thanks, Robin. I forget dates and places so often now I know I’ll enjoy having this year in pictures to look back at in the future. Glad you like the shot of Finn. 🙂
