A Surprise Every Day: Shaking Up November With Hipstamatic ( week 1)

As I sit in front of my computer tonight, three days after the day I wanted to finish this post I’m reminded one more time why this random image, daily photo project is important.  It’s so easy to get lost in our busy days.  I rush from work to evening events, the laundry room to the grocery store with maybe a quick stop to pay bills and it seems like any brief moments of down time are spent talking with friends or family about how busy we are before moving on to the next item on the list.  Before I stopped to really think about today’s pictures I’d already cataloged last week as a busy blur and turned my focus to what’s ahead for the next 7 days but now that I’ve carved out some time to review what was important to me in these flash moments I’m reminded of the big things that happened and can see common threads binding the days that weren’t obvious at the time.  Perspective can be a good thing.

If you read my end of October post you’ll know Halloween is a big deal in our house but November 1st is just as important as John brings out his favorite Day of the Dead  shirt and we remember friends and family that have passed.  John loves this shirt so much he buys a new one each time we visit a small t-shirt store in Santa Fe to replace the threadbare memento from our last vacation.  Monday I stopped to snap a photo of the soggy remains from our outdoor pumpkin carving bonanza and Tuesday brought a nice reminder that even though our summer droughts have been hard on the native Cedar trees they’ve been busy sending out new sprouts to revive the forests.

Wednesday this view of our flag caught my eye outside of the post office and Thursday night brought Ryan’s first high school band concert.  He looked so grown up in his new tuxedo I couldn’t let the evening end without an official picture.  Instead of a night on the town Friday now means a chance to finish weekday chores and go to bed early… I found myself alone in Ryan’s room putting away laundry and thought his vintage Marvel Super Hero calendar would make a fun subject for the day’s photo.  Our week ended Saturday night in much the same way it began Sunday morning, remembering those who passed.  John, Ryan and I attended the heartfelt memorial and a reception for a wonderful woman and mother of a dear friend who left us too soon.  This small photo is of our three glasses, wine, beer and lemonade after a toast to Linda.

Each photo was taken with my iPhone 6 using Hipstamatic’s “shake to randomize” function then posted without any additional editing. If you like a particular combination and want to try it at home just click on the image to see the lens, filter and flash used.  For variety I continue to add new lenses and filters so if you want to try Hipstamatic but are unsure how to start let me know and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.

I’m going to have to get my questions together about Hipstamatic, as I can’t figure out how to get anything done. But as I’m busy, too, it might be a little while. Enjoyed your post.

I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the post, Janet. Don’t worry too much about Hipstamatic, you can take fun photos without a big learning curve. For me the key is to not overthink it. 🙂

Thanks, Nancy. Even though every photo I post is from a quick moment in our daily lives I don’t always share the full back stories so it’s nice to hear you appreciate it when I let a little more real life come through.

I love this one, Lisa! Aside from your pride and joy looking so grown up, it’s wonderful that you make some quiet time to sit and mull over the week with us. You have a very beautiful way of sharing. Hope this week has its joyful moments too, as it whizzes past. 🙂

So many people are upset that we take pictures with our phones–that it takes us away from “reality”–puts a barrier there. But this is an example of how it can immerse us more into the things that really matter to us. It immerses us into life–doesn’t take us out. Love the portrait of Ryan, btw. 🙂

Thanks so much, Melissa. I always try to maintain a healthy balance between being present for daily life and preserving moments via photos to enhance memories later. It’s really nice to hear you appreciate my efforts and enjoyed the view into our week. 🙂
