Hellebore

While local garden centers are filled with pretty displays of spring bulbs and primroses I’m starting to worry about the mostly dormant state of my own yard.  Plants that usually bud and flower in early February show no signs of growth and my weeds are the only green things that look truly happy but this one brave hellebore is giving me hope for a brighter season to come.

Taken with my iPhone 7+ and edited in Snapseed and VSCO.

Thanks, Joanne! I had to climb under a rhododendron to get it but I was determined to find some color. 😊🌺

Nice! I think with all the rain, at least in California, many bulbs and flowers will be blooming late this year. I’ve seen this before. The weeds are definitely going crazy this year.

It’s great to hear you’ve got rain though! Just not too much…

I’m glad I kept the lawn alive throughout the drought, otherwise it would be a mud bog for Maggie & Sally. Quite squishy when I walk through the grass.

well glad this gave you hope – maybe the late start has to do with weather???

I think so, Y. It’s been much colder than normal and we’ve almost tripled the average rainfall for February. Still two weeks to go too!

I’ll admit to spending way too much time on Twitter but I’ve also missed everyone here. I’m trying to be more present here this year so we should “see” more of each other soon!

Hellebores are always surprising to me, the way they bloom in late winter. I have a plant that is starting to bloom, but the flowers are small and pale yellow. I want to look for something more showy, hellebores come in so many varieties and colors…

I’ve got a few different pinks, a white, a black (really it’s dark purple) and some green ones. Can you tell I’m looking for color in the winter? 😊 Yellow sounds pretty too!

The torrential rain has just exposed that fact that my hellebores got flattened under last week’s heavy snowfall in Vancouver. A few sad-looking buds – maybe spring will arrive next week? Lucky you to find even one and such a gorgeous example too!

Oh no! We missed most of the snow and resulting damage here but it’s been sooooo wet. Fingers crossed we all get a break soon.

So gorgeous. I haven’t noticed if my hellebores have any buds. It’s just grey and dismal in NJ. Thank you for adding some sunshine and color to my day! 🙂

I need to get out there and look for my hellebores, which may have frozen or drowned. I have black ones, but none that are this colorful. Outstanding!

I have the white one, but I must get a few of the other colours, they are so rewarding in the depths of winter.

That’s what I like about them too, Jude. They bloom when really need to see flowers. A great bridge out of winter.

Lisa, that capture inspires. Well done. I’ll have to check my plants, because many spring early bloomers are peaking out, and that usually happens next month. Have you had a colder winter? In many ways it’s better late than early, because I worry about the fruit trees in early bloom, and than a hard frost hits.

Yes, it’s been colder and wetter here than a typical winter. You’re right that a late spring is probably easier on the plants than an early one with danger of frost still around.
