Fresh Berries and Lazy Summer Days…

Blue pond at an Oregon farm.

Better than any argument is to rise at dawn and pick dew-wet red berries in a cup.  Wendell Berry

While I appreciate the sentiment behind this quote and am sure I’d thoroughly enjoy a summer dawn with fresh picked berries I can also vouch for the fact that they are great in the late morning straight from a farm stand and wonderful in my afternoon wine glass. 🙂

All photos are from a lovely long weekend in Oregon with my sister, her husband and my sweet niece, Sophia.  Sophia sipped her fresh grape juice while the rest of us tasted our way through fantastic wines from J. Christopher and Ponzi wineries.

Oh what a fun time and the photos are vivid and color packed – love the textures in the berries on the barrel – and wish I could sample!

Fresh berries for a warm summer afternoon. Sounds delightful. If I was near, I’d come round with a bottle of chocolate sauce to go along with those berries 😁 Enjoy the rest of summer, Lisa.

Sounds like a lovely time, Lisa. I love the quote, but usually settle for either getting up early to pick (up) berries at the farmers market or getting them much more prosaically, but still deliciously, at the grocery store. Last week I tried dehydrating blueberries for the first time (despite having had the dehydrator for many years.) The experiment was a (lengthy) success and I’m going to have another go, but blanch the berries first, which seems to be the secret for a shorter drying time. I’ve also frozen quite a few while they’ve been on sale. 🙂 Yum!

I’m glad you like the quote, Janet! Your dehydrator blueberry technique sounds like a gret way to keep some for winter baking. I’ve frozen my fair share and spent lots of time with jam in the past but this year nothing has lasted long enough to preserve. 😉

I only have the freezer at the top of my fridge and that’s pretty full right now, including a number of bags of blueberries. I just put 4 pints in the dehydrator (the number of trays it has) so another batch is in the works. Makes me feel so pioneer-ish, although they would have dried berries in the sun. 🙂
