1 Day 1 World Project 12:00 am – 1:00 am

1D1W 12a

How many of us have late night Diner stories ready to share with just a bit of prompting?  John and I each have some fun memories of long hours spent with friends in the red vinyl booths of a neighborhood Denny’s. From High School study sessions to after bar closing time in college most of them involve coffee, large quantities of greasy food and groups of laughing friends.

Now that I’m in my 40’s 12:00 am usually finds me in bed but in an effort to think of something original to share for this weeks post we thought it would be an adventure to stay up late with Ryan and show him a peek of what goes on after midnight… It’s funny how the streets that look so familiar at noon take on a different mood 12 hours later and Ryan’s head was turning right and left taking in the sights while asking non-stop questions about how many people were still up and where did we think they were going.

At Denny’s we were lucky enough to get a corner booth and after a long look at the menus everyone settled on chocolate milkshakes and fries.  Watching the different tables and trying to eavesdrop was really entertaining and if we couldn’t hear the real words we put our heads together and invented conversations between strangers. The time passed so quickly that midnight was here before I was ready but as luck would have it there was one open stool at the bar looking directly into the kitchen and the neon clock on the wall. I walked over, waited for my moment and snapped a photo capturing the 12:00 am hour.

It’s hard to believe we’ve turned the corner and are starting the second half of this 24 hour project, time sure does fly when you’re having fun.  If you have a photo or story to share about your 12:00 am hour I’d love to see it!   Please tag your post 1 Day 1 World Project for easy reader searches and/or link your post in a comment below so we can all enjoy the view. Together we’ll build a virtual 24 hour day filled with images from around the world.

If you’re new to the 1 Day 1 World Project please take a look at my introductory post here.  This 12:00 am post will remain open for submissions until the end of Saturday, August 2nd and a new post for the 1:00 am hour will open for entries Sunday, August 3rd.

1 Day 1 World Project: 10:00 pm – 11:00 pm

1D1W 10 1

I’m not really a night person so a good evening for me means lights out by 10:00 pm.  Summers are tough because it’s not dark yet but our mornings still start bright and early so finding some interesting material to post over the next few weeks is going to be quite a challenge. 🙂

This week I thought about taking a picture of the book I’m reading but I couldn’t get a good shot of the Kindle screen and I started to worry this would be a really boring post talking about nothing at all.  Lucky for you my whole family is having fun thinking of ideas each week and today’s photos are thanks to John’s prompt and Ryan’s Elementary school P.T.A.

A few years ago the Parent Teacher Association gave every student a Dream Journal encouraging them to think big and record their thoughts.  The image above is a photo of the front cover, inside are blank pages with inspirational quotes in the corners and the tagline “DREAM every day.”  The back cover is below.

1D1W 10 2

So, instead of sleeping at 10:00 I am talking about dreams and hoping we all set aside a few minutes each week to record our thoughts and capture our stories.

If you have a photo or story to share about your 10:00 pm hour I’d love to see it!   Please tag your post 1 Day 1 World Project for easy reader searches and/or link your post in a comment below so we can all enjoy the view. Together we’ll build a virtual 24 hour day filled with images from around the world.

1 Day 1 World Project: 9:00 pm – 10:00 pm

1D1W 9

Everyone in the Pacific Northwest jokes that summer doesn’t really start here until July 5th.  We usually have one or two warm days in June surrounded by partly sunny days mixed with some rain and clouds but the real heat and sunshine doesn’t come out until mid July.  This year our one early hot day happened to be July 1st  and instead of spending our evening in front of the fans I thought we should pack up our dinner to go and take a picnic to the beach.  Why stay inside looking for the fans when we could be on the sand with cool ocean breezes and natural air conditioning?  The clouds rolled in just before sunset so I didn’t get a shot of a beautiful, pink sky but this photo does illustrate how nice it is during these long June and July nights when it is light until 10:00 pm.

Frequent readers might notice a few familiar things in this shot, there’s Ryan of course and he’s standing on the huge beach log I’ve photographed plenty of times, wearing his straw hat and yes, carrying a big stick…

We are nearing the end of my easy to photograph hours as I’m definitely not a night owl so it’s time to brainstorm some creative ways to get through the next few months. 🙂  If you have a photo or story to share about your 9:00 pm hour I’d love to see it!

This 9:00 pm post will remain open for submissions until the end of Saturday, July 12th and a new post for the 10:00 pm hour will open for entries Sunday, July 13th.

I will include a list of participant links below but please be patient during the second half of the week while we are away for some family vacation time without WiFi and little to no cell coverage.  Four whole days with nothing to do but relax, eat, hike and explore a new island!

If you saw my iPhone Monday and Wordless Wednesday posts last week you’ll know I spent last Sunday evening with my parents watching Emmylou Harris perform at Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery in Woodinville, WA.  The winery grounds are beautiful and behind the main tasting building is a natural amphitheater with a large, grass-covered hill for picnics and a small flat space up front for reserved chairs.  We were lucky enough to have seats in the first few rows but really any spot around the amphitheater is a good one.  You can pack in your own food for picnics or buy a meal at the gourmet food trucks that line the south side of the lawn and of course, wine is everywhere.  Sharp eyes might notice that my Wordless Wednesday wine photo was of a bottle of white, which we enjoyed with Indian Kebabs and salad before moving on to red for the show.  🙂

One of the fun things about this 1 Day 1 World project is that it is pushing me to try new things while looking for interesting posting material each week.  So far I’ve taken you with us to enjoy waterfront festivals, local beaches, neighborhood church signs and the streets of Seattle.  Last week I wrote about Ryan’s Tae Kwan Do class and this week I looked more closely at the area around the Rec Center on the way back to the car wondering where a narrow path off the parking lot would lead us.  A few steps in and we couldn’t see the city buildings or hear traffic on the roadway but we found twisting trails, huge ferns and some weathered benches.   I had no idea this green space existed in the middle of such an urban setting but am happy the city quietly continues to maintain the paths for those who are curious enough to take a look.

Last week was full of interesting entries here at the 1 Day 1 World Project and included posts from  bloggers in England, Poland, Singapore, Canada, Netherlands and Australia as well as the States of Washington, Oregon, California, New Hampshire, Illinois, Wisconsin and Texas sharing their 6:00 hours.  Now if you have a photo or story to share about your 7:00 pm hour I’d love to see it!   Please tag your post 1 Day 1 World Project for easy reader searches and/or link your post in a comment below so we can all enjoy the view. 1 Day 1 World Project: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

1D1W 6

Twice a week for the past seven years I’ve spent my 6:00 pm hour here at the Lynnwood Recreation Center watching Ryan in his Tae Kwan Do class.  When he started I was simply looking for a fun activity that also taught focus and discipline and while he has definitely learned these lessons the experience has been more involved and rewarding than we ever anticipated.  Today he has a great group of  friends, both boys and girls, from outside his school circle that support each other and watching them grow and learn has been a fantastic experience for all of us.

The atmosphere is challenging but positive and along with their kicks, punches and forms the kids also learn self-defense, respect, camaraderie, team work and the feeling of success after a lot of hard work.  The instructor is an accomplished sixth degree black belt who has taught kids for over 20 years and for a day job he is also a youth pastor.  He takes his position as a role model very seriously and every lesson on fighting techniques is balanced with reminders about the importance of courtesy and safety.  Strength and grace.

Last week was a busy one here at the 1 Day 1 World Project and we had our largest number of views and entries so far.  Fellow bloggers from Slovenia, England, Singapore, Germany and Australia as well as the American States of Washington, Oregon, California, New Hampshire, Illinois, Virginia, Wisconsin and Texas joined in to give us a peek into their 5:00 hours. 1 Day 1 World Project: 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm

1D1W5

The late afternoon/early evening hours are my favorite times of day and since we’ve had a stretch of absolutely beautiful June weather the toughest part of today’s post was choosing which photo to share.  In the end I settled on this shot from Brackett’s Landing because even though Herons are a common sight in our part of the Pacific Northwest this is the first time I’ve successfully captured one on film.

The Heron remained in this spot hunting for its dinner while ignoring  the families playing and freight trains clattering behind us.  I lost track of how long we stood here watching but Ryan and I couldn’t leave the beach for home and our own dinner until we saw a successful catch.

It’s been so much fun to watch this series grow in popularity and a quick view of my stats revealed the project introduction is already my second most viewed post of the past 12 months.  Quite a feat considering it’s only been up for six weeks!  Last week was really entertaining and we saw entries from Slovenia, England and Australia as well as the US States of Washington, Oregon, California, and Texas. If you have a photo or story to share about your 5:00 pm hour I’d love to see it!   Please tag your post 1 Day 1 World Project for easy reader searches and/or link your post in a comment below so we can all enjoy your view. 1 Day 1 World Project: 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm

The early hours of this project have been a lot of fun here at the Kennedy house as we’ve been able to go out and see some new things every week looking for new material to post.  I’m still not sure how we will make the nighttime hours look interesting but hey, a little challenge is good for us.  Stay tuned. 🙂

1D1W4 1

Today we took a long walk down to the beach, ready to see the Edmonds Waterfront Festival.  The festival is an annual fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Edmonds and the proceeds go to some very worthy causes during the year.

1D1W4 2

Ryan’s first stop had to be the french fry and hot dog stand he’s dreamed about since last years outing.  I’ll admit, they were worth the wait!

1D1W4 3

After the tub of fries I was able to walk past the hot doughnut truck but couldn’t resist a quick picture.

1D1W4 4

At the end of a row of vendors selling sparkly outfits, blow up sharks and bubble wands was a lone stand of political expression.

1D1W4 5

Finally John and I stood below and watched Ryan climb the rock tower not once but twice.  All in all a great way to spend the afternoon.

1 Day 1 World Project: 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

1D1W3

Ryan and I were at the end of our long list of Saturday afternoon errands when he announced he needed a long, thick stick for a Social Studies project due Tuesday.  Of course none of our sticks at home would work, he needed a new one.  From the beach.  I’m pretty sure he just wanted to go to the beach but since it is my favorite place to end a day I turned the car around and we drove to Marina Park.

It was hard to find a parking place and a fire truck at the end of the lot looked a little out of place but we started digging through driftwood in search of  the perfect stick.  It didn’t take long to figure out why the fire truck was there, along with the extra emergency rescue boats and lots of bystanders with cameras.  Do you see something odd in the photo above?

Before we arrived a Kenmore Air seaplane experienced engine trouble over the Sound. Fortunately the pilot was able to land safely on the water and the plane was towed to the beach!  Rescue crews arrived but found everyone was alright, just a little shaken up and while a company mechanic raced up the freeway to see the plane a few people from the marina came over with ropes. Together they secured the plane to the beach so it wouldn’t float away while they scratched their heads and figured out what to do next.

I thought today’s post would be a normal view of a quiet afternoon but you never know when a plane will (safely) crash right into your 3:00 hour.

Someone in this church has a great sense of humor…  They are on a busy street close to our neighborhood and while one side of the sign always announces  upcoming club meetings and service times the front is left free to share a message, a laugh or something to think about.  We drove by this one last week and as luck would have it my next walk brought me right by the sign at 2:45 in the afternoon in plenty of time to click a quick photo for today’s 2:00 pm hour post.

If you have a photo or story to share about your 2:00 pm hour I’d love to see it!   Please tag your post 1 Day 1 World Project for easy reader searches and/or link your post in a comment below so we can all enjoy your view and together we’ll build a virtual 24 hour day filled with images from around the world.

If you’re new to the 1 Day 1 World Project please take a look at my introductory post here.  This 2:00 pm post will remain open for new submissions until the end of Saturday, May 24th and a new post for the 3:00 pm hour will open for entries Sunday, May 25th.

1 Day 1 World Project: 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm

For the 1:00 pm entry in my new  1 Day 1 World Project I have this stormy view of Seattle taken from our Sky City table at the top of the Space Needle.  The restaurant makes a complete 360 degree rotation every 47 minutes and  John, Ryan and I recently spent a fantastic 2 1/2 hours celebrating Ryan’s birthday while enjoying the incredible views.  You might remember we spent Ryan’s actual 13th birthday giving away free books as part of World Book Night 2014 and even though he was incredibly generous with his special day I promised we would plan something fun later that was all about him.  Well, this lunch was definitely in his honor but John and I enjoyed it as much as he did!

Our first 1 Day 1 World posts captured noontime moments from Germany, Canada, England, Singapore and the American states of California, Illinois, Oregon, Texas and Washington. If you have a photo or story to share about your 1:00 pm hour I’d love to see it!   Please tag your post 1 Day 1 World Project for easy reader searches and/or link your post in a comment below so we can all enjoy your view and together we’ll build a virtual 24 hour day filled with images from around the world.

1 Day 1 World Project: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

To kick off my new 1 Day 1 World Project I have this noontime view of Westlake Center in Downtown Seattle.  This photo actually represents a few first moments for me as it is also what I saw during my first break on my first day in a new job.  Its been 18 years since I’ve had a “first day on the job” experience but after the past 6 months of watching a company that felt like family be taken apart in a corporate buyout I am really ready for a new beginning…  It was tough going for a while but now I’m happy to say I’ve landed in a great place and wake up each day excited about what is ahead.

If you have a photo or story to share about your 12:00 pm hour I’d love to see it!   Please tag your post 1 Day 1 World Project for easy reader searches and/or link your post in a comment below so we can all enjoy your view and together we’ll build a virtual 24 hour day filled with images from around the world.
