Fresh Berries and Lazy Summer Days…

Better than any argument is to rise at dawn and pick dew-wet red berries in a cup.  Wendell Berry

While I appreciate the sentiment behind this quote and am sure I’d thoroughly enjoy a summer dawn with fresh picked berries I can also vouch for the fact that they are great in the late morning straight from a farm stand and wonderful in my afternoon wine glass. 🙂

All photos are from a lovely long weekend in Oregon with my sister, her husband and my sweet niece, Sophia.  Sophia sipped her fresh grape juice while the rest of us tasted our way through fantastic wines from J. Christopher and Ponzi wineries.

A Surprise Every Day: Shaking Up July With Hipstamatic (week 5)

Another beautiful week has come and gone here in the Pacific Northwest and I’m happy to say we spent every minute possible enjoying outdoor living and a bit of travel.  Sunday afternoon Ryan and I hiked to the lovely waterfall from yesterday’s post along with my aunt, sister and her family and Monday this was our view from the train window on our trip home.  Tuesday’s image a small section of some public art outside the Lynnwood Senior Center and Wednesday’s photo is the amazing evening sun from the rooftop garden of our local library.

After all that sunshine I thought Thursday would be a great time to capture the Blue Moon and apparently Hipstamatic agreed framing the image with this purple/blue border.  Friday was “too hot to handle” inside our house so we packed up dinner to-go and brought everything down to the beach.  This view is from our walk back to the car.  Saturday’s photo is of my try-at-home box of Warby Parker sunglasses.  If you haven’t heard of this company they specialize in quality eye wear with a retro-hipster edge.  Knowing it’s hard to select frames online they ship a box of your 5 choices free of charge to your home for a 5 day trial period and for every frame purchased a pair is distributed to someone in need.  Today I brought one of my 5 up to Wallace Falls and plan to work my way through the box during our staycation.

Today’s “Shake It Up” post will be my last here until August 9th but I won’t be vacationing from all my social media accounts.  If you’d like to follow our adventures through the beaches, forests and mountains of Washington State I’ll be dusting off my neglected Instagram account and increasing postings on Facebook. Everyone’s welcome to come by for a visit, peek over our shoulders and hike the trails with us!

Each photo was taken with my iPhone 6 using Hipstamatic’s “shake to randomize” function then posted without any additional editing. If you like a particular combination and want to try it at home just click on the image to see the lens and filter used.  For variety I continue to add new lenses and filters so if you want to try Hipstamatic but are unsure how to start let me know and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Searching For Inspiration

We’ve reached the middle of the hottest summer on record here in the Pacific Northwest and the soaring temperatures combined with our home’s lack of air conditioning are making me long for cool forest pools and fresh waterfalls.  Thank goodness it’s time for vacation!

This year we’ve decided to shake things up and instead of traveling for a destination holiday we’re planning a series of day trips designed to get us out of the hot house and into some of the beautiful scenery we live with but can’t appreciate fully during the work week.

If all goes as planned we will board the Washington State Ferries, visit Pt. Townsend and Fort Warden, hike to Wallace Falls, visit the Seattle Aquarium and ride the Great Wheel, hike two more days around Snoqualmie Pass and finish with a final trip to Whidbey Island.  Mixed with these adventures are some stay home family nights with BBQ dinners, party lanterns and movies in the backyard.  A true staycation!

Close Up

During our walk to the grape vines from my previous post we passed a colony of bees harvesting pollen from this lovely border of sedum…

Travel Theme: Tilted

Alisa’s current travel theme challenges us to show images illustrating the word Tilted.  I spent a few days looking through my archives and finally chose two photos from summer vacations that were a little off kilter…

Tilted 1

I really admire the tenacious nature of these tough pine trees surviving on the edges of the San Juan Islands.  We spent a fun few days camping here on Sucia but a storm during our last night on the island caused a bit of trouble. The aftermath  was the subject of my post Weekly Photo Challenge: Escape.

Tilted 2

We shared a few hot, sticky summer days with my sister in Oregon before packing a picnic and driving to the coast for some cooler temperatures.  My photo featured in the Weekly Photo Challenge:  Kiss is from that afternoon.  When we got back I couldn’t believe it had been so hot the red candle melted on the patio…
