My Year In Pictures: June Week 4

Strawberries, flowers, sail boats and lazy days at the lake – this week’s set of photos is all about summer memories new and old.  The week started with this pretty shot from my parent’s garden followed by one of our tiny wild strawberry plants caught in the middle of an evening sunbeam.  Next is a scan from an old film photo of our sweet dog Maxi who was the perfect combination of black lab and border collie meaning she was smart as a whip, devoted to her pack and always ready to play.  This was taken about 15 years ago at a lakefront party when Ryan was baby and Max took a few minutes off from nanny duty to enjoy the sun.

Wednesday I stopped to laugh at this set of fridge magnets, there’s one for every situation, and Thursday night I made a quick trip to the nursery for a few more flowers so we could finish our deck pots.  Friday evening John and I took a walk around the marina instead of working out at the gym and Saturday I couldn’t resist one more shot of this beautiful view.

Coming soon I’ve got a great set of new photos almost ready to share here from our latest adventures and if you’d like to follow along in real-time don’t forget I post my daily photos on InstagramTwitter and Facebook. If a once-a-week blog read is more your speed my weekly recaps will continue here along with caption notes containing editing information for each photo.

Sally D’s Mobile Photography Challenge: Challenger’s Choice (Shades of Finn)

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve joined Sally’s weekly photography challenge but I’m ready to end the year on a high note and jump right back in with two images for this week’s theme of challenger’s choice (animals).

When I opened our Etsy store in November I knew it would mean a lot of extra work and that my hands would have to make a choice each evening between blogging and creating something new to list in the shop but sometimes these two endeavors can coexist and last night I found a way to do both.

Of all the things John and I have learned to make this year and of all the big ideas we have on our future “to do/to learn” list I never expected these little wool dryer balls to be our most viewed and best-selling item.   I hand-roll each ball but my fingers can only take so much winding before cramps set in so after each ball I take a little rest to shake things out.  Last night I discovered this is just the right amount of time to edit a photo so today you get to see my break-time handiwork.

I like both images for different reasons so since I missed last week’s black and white challenge I decided to go ahead and share the pair.  The original photo was taken over Christmas weekend with my iPhone 6 while Finn was waiting for John to come back inside.  The black and white was edited in VSCO cam using the LV2 preset while the color version was edited in Oggl using Ray Mark II and Estrada 83. I like elements in each photo but would love to hear what you think.  Black and white or color?

A Surprise Everyday: Shaking up July With Hipstamatic (week 1)

I have a quick little recap today since we just got home from a weekend away with family celebrating the 4th of July.   Ryan is spending the next 5 days with his Grandparents and John and I are on our way to pick up some take out for dinner so we can sit on the deck until dark.  The laundry and grocery shopping can wait till tomorrow!

Our week started with a Sunday trip to the Edmonds fishing pier for a walk while wishing crabbing season was open so we could throw in a few pots.  Monday night’s image shows how badly Finn wants to walk on 2 legs, or at least be a little taller so he can scare a squirrel and Tuesday’s photo is of a broken arrow I found on the side of the road by our mailbox.  Hmm…

Wednesday is proof that even though Ryan is now taller than me he is still a kid at heart and can’t pass a toy sale without stopping for a good browse.  Thursday is the one and only spider web I will every post here (I really don’t like them but for some reason I took three shots of this early morning web) and Friday afternoon I found some hungry Seattleites lining up in this strip of shade to enjoy their hot dogs.  The week ended with a fun family BBQ at my brother and sister in law’s home celebrating the 4th of July.  Fireworks were banned due to extreme fire danger but I saw stars in my wine glass all night long. 🙂

Each photo was taken with my iPhone 6 using Hipstamatic’s “shake to randomize” function then posted without any additional editing. If you like a particular combination and want to try it at home just click on the image to see the lens and filter used.  For variety I continue to add new lenses and filters so if you want to try Hipstamatic but are unsure how to start let me know and I’ll do my best to answer your questions.

A Surprise Every Day: Shaking Up April with Hipstamatic (week 3)

Another busy week has come and gone but over all it’s been a good one here in our little corner of the Pacific Northwest.  While my days fly by in a blur of work, family, driving and if I’m lucky a little bit of blogging I’ve been trying very hard to recognize those quiet moments that tell stories and make me smile.

We started our week with a Sunday tour of the Seattle Underground with my brother Erich and his family.  We had a great time wandering through Pioneer Square and If you’re ever in the city and want to learn why the buildings in Pioneer Square have entrances, sidewalks and skylights below the streets, what happened after the entire business district burned to the ground and how a large part of the downtown is now built on fill from 4 huge re-grade projects I suggest signing up for a tour.  Monday’s photo is a close up of Ryan’s favorite Solar System place mat after from the cousins Sunday breakfast. Ryan’s always been fascinated with science and natural history but he also has a full-fledged boy crush on everyone in the Marvel Superhero universe so Tuesday’s photo is our Corn Flakes box promoting the new Avengers movie The Age of Ultron and Thor.

Wednesday’s photo is my current library book, Foxglove Summer.  This is the latest book Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London series and another great story filled with mystery, snappy dialogue, social commentary, life in London and a bit of the supernatural.  Thursday is a cleaning up an after dinner shot and here’s the view from my kitchen sink.  You can see two of Ryan’s elementary school art projects and a blue bowl left in our house by the previous owner.  Together they hold the bits and pieces I find scattered around the house along with some beach treasures.

You might have heard the latest Star Wars teaser clip came out this week and Friday afternoon found me thinking about the day 38 years ago when my Aunt Maryellen drove me 3 hours round trip to Seattle so we could see the first movie together. Sadly that theater was torn down several years ago but this beautiful building still stands a few blocks away.  In 1916 The Coliseum opened as the first theater built specifically for showing movies in Seattle and though it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places the inside has been completely re-worked into a retail store.

My photo-a-day week ends with this shot of Finn in our backyard Saturday morning.  We were outside together cleaning up a planting bed behind our deck and right after I took this shot my blogging friend Andra Watkins called. Andra is in town this weekend as part of a west coast tour promoting her latest book Not Without My Father: One Woman’s 444 Mile Walk of the Natchez Trace (click here to see my Amazon review). I can’t wait to meet up Sunday afternoon but when I answered the phone I said I was outside with my face in the ferns. I’m sure she thinks I’m weird but hopefully I can explain what I really meant in person. 🙂

Each photo is straight from Hipstamatic’s “shake to randomize” function and posted without any additional editing. If you like a particular combination and want to try it at home just click on the image to see the lens and filter used.  For variety I downloaded some new lenses and filters this week so if you want to try Hipstamatic but are unsure how to start let me know and I’ll do my best to answer your questions!

A Surprise Every Day: Shaking Up April With Hipstamatic (week 2)

Even though I was away from blogging last week I continued my attempt to take one random photo every day and am here for a quick Sunday night post recapping the past seven days.  Ryan enjoyed a relaxing spring break while I had a great time exploring new ways to structure my time and really thinking about what I want to accomplish between now and the end of the year.  I’ll be back online soon to catch up with all of you and see what’s happened while I’ve been gone!

Easter Sunday was a lovely spring day and we spent most of it eating candy, cooking dinner and watching movies.  Our pan of roasted asparagus is the first image of the week and I couldn’t resist this smiling shot of Finn as my photo for Monday.  Tuesday found me at the grocery store wondering which wine to pick and Wednesday is my view up through the trees in our yard waiting for Finn to sniff around and finish his “business.”  Thursday afternoon I walked past this cheery Easter tree and Friday is a trip back in time with this shot of my mom’s sewing room and some old ballet photos from our high school days.  Only one is of me but you can find plenty of my lovely sister and her friends. 🙂  Saturday morning my dad and I paid an early morning visit to the Skagit Valley Tulip Fields and my first photo of the season is this shot on the edge of a display garden.  Stay tuned for more tulip photos throughout the month of April. 🙂

iPhoneography Monday: Animals (Fun with Finn)

Well, at least one of us was having fun… This was my first day experimenting with Hipstamatic’s shake-it-to-randomize feature and Finn was being a good sport but really all he wanted to do was sleep.

Both images were taken with my iPhone 6 in Hipstamatic using Bettie XL and Big Up.  Posted as part of Lens and Pen by Sally’s Phoneography and Non-SLR Digital Devices Photo Challenge:  Challenger’s Choice (Animals).
