A Surprise Every Day: Shaking Up March With Hipstamatic (week 4)

I think any week that starts with a big party is bound to go well and this past one was no exception.  Our Sunday began in Bellingham with a beautiful lunch in honor of my mom’s birthday and ended with the discovery of these pretty, pink camellia blooms. I’ve been tending to this bush for 5 years now hoping it would bloom and even though it waited to flower until after a boundary dispute with our neighbors placed it on their side of the line I’m still happy with the results of the survey.   Monday’s photo is of Ryan’s wrestling team before their last regular season meet, he is third from the left in profile, and Tuesday’s photo is a pairing that always makes me laugh.  Seeing a Microsoft store next to a wine shop strikes me as funny (do you drink before or after the purchase?) and Hipstamatic’s random choices pushed it a bit farther by blending the two storefronts in the shop windows, mirroring the metal cut out of a woman shopping to look both ways then adding a new black frame to emphasize the connection.

Wednesday’s peanut shot is from our night out at 5 Guys Burgers and Thursday afternoon found me waiting for Ryan’s phone call and the news that he was off the bus and home from school.  Friday’s photo is a little misleading as it makes this part of our yard look like a green paradise.  Really this bed only blooms in the spring and looks like a dead zone for the remaining 9 months but we’ll enjoy it while we can.  Saturday found me trying to capture my favorite puffy white clouds in a blue sky but the random processing decided on dramatic sepia tones.  I like it anyway and will try for more traditional blue and white another time. 🙂

Each photo is straight from Hipstamatic’s “shake to randomize” function and posted without any additional editing. A Surprise Every Day: Shaking Up March With Hipstamatic (week 1)

These past seven days are exactly why I need a project like this shake-it-up series.  Every day was filled with things to do and tasks to accomplish but working through each item that needed my attention meant I had very little time for creativity.  Usually I end a stretch like this feeling grumpy about the lack of any fun time but this week I took a different approach so instead of spending 10 minutes complaining about how busy I was I spent 5 minutes standing still looking for something interesting to photograph. Even though I know I live in a pretty part of the world it’s hard to appreciate what you have in the middle of a crazy day and this project is shaking up my old habits, reminding me of the great things I might be taking for granted.

The week started with another sunny dog walk compliments of the warmest winter I’ve ever experienced in the Pacific Northwest then Monday morning I snapped this photo of some pretty red lanterns celebrating the Lunar New Year.  Tuesday was a big day for our family as Ryan and I sat down to fill out his High School registration form.  I can’t believe he’s almost 14 but after we finished he asked if we could go down to the waterfront and watch the sunset together so I know  he’s still my little boy at heart.  Wednesday was a true test of this project as I only had a few minutes before an evening meeting and realized I didn’t have a photo for the day but instead of giving up I walked through the front yard and saw new green growth one of our mini mugo pines.

Every spring I buy new primroses for our pots and every summer John pulls the faded plants and throws them in the compost bin so we can replant with annuals.  I think it is a waste of perfectly good plants however it looks like this cheery yellow flower survived the carnage and graced us with a flower Thursday morning.  Friday saw me back in Downtown Seattle and since I didn’t want to take another traffic shot I decided to step into the bus tunnel running underneath the center of the city.  I like to think this huge ticking clock counts down the hours until the end of the workweek.  Saturday’s photo is an image that didn’t come out as I hoped but I like it anyway.  These long, curving branches are covered with moss and in our early morning light they remind me of giant arms reaching out from the ivy covered tree trunks.  I don’t think I would have deliberately processed this frame in black and white but now I quiet like it…  I’ll just have to go back another day to capture all the green.

iPhoneography Monday: Animals (Fun with Finn)

Well, at least one of us was having fun… This was my first day experimenting with Hipstamatic’s shake-it-to-randomize feature and Finn was being a good sport but really all he wanted to do was sleep.

A Surprise Every Day: Shaking Up February With Hipstamatic (week 3)

While most of the country is trapped in a sub-zero weather pattern our strangely warm Pacific Northwest winter brought bright blue skies and temperatures in the 50’s.  No one knows quite what to do here but we’re trying to spend as much time outside as possible knowing the rain and chilly air will be back before we know it.

If you’ve looked closely at my weekly “shake it up” photos this month you might have noticed I spend a lot of time walking Finn, parking the car and buying food.  Thankfully Hipstamatic has a randomize feature that brings new life to these daily tasks or this series would be one flat image after another of streets, cookies and cars!

Sunday the 15th was a beautiful day so even though the wind was cold Ryan and I spent a fun hour at the beach soaking up the sun.  Monday the 16th is another mushroom shot from my morning dog walk and I like the unexpected touch of this high contrast black and white treatment in such a green setting.  Tuesday the 17th is another view of our neighborhood and so you don’t think all I do is walk around outside Wednesday the 18th shows the little slice of sky I managed to see sandwiched between floors of concrete.

Thursday the 19th is from a sky bridge in Seattle looking north up 6th avenue and Friday the 20th is a quick shot of our grocery store’s bakery where I picked up some cookies before my morning presentation.  By the time Saturday rolled around I was happy to be outside again, walking Finn and enjoying another beautiful morning.

Like last week these photos are all straight from Hipstamatic’s “shake to randomize” function and posted without any additional editing.
