In the winter of 1945 the USS Nereus left for it’s first voyage departing Pearl Harbor bound for Japan. Through it’s 25 year career the Nereus supported US submarines across the Pacific and as far north as the Arctic Circle. An Edmonds resident served aboard the ship in 1955 and in 2012 the city of Edmonds purchased the steering column to join a memorial dedicated to the service of the young men and women who live in the area.
You can still rest your fingers on the wooden wheel and give it a twist while thinking about the lands and miles this ship saw during its long career.
