Phoneography Monday: Macro 7-8-13

2 Macro 7-8-13

1 Macro 7-8-13

When looking through my photo files for something to illustrate a post my first impulse usually leads me to an image with bright bold colors.   There is a big world out there though filled with muted, grungy colors and one of the things I love about Lens and Pen by Sally’s Phoneography Challenges is the opportunity to stretch out of my comfort zone and try new things.

This star pattern above is from one of the steps at a local playground and its original color is a bright, sunny yellow.  Many happy feet and countless years of stormy weather have deposited an interesting pattern of dirt, wood chips and pine needles so I thought today’s Macro Challenge would be a fun place to experiment with a few new applications.

I couldn’t leave my bright colors behind completely though and now I can’t choose between the two images.  The first is the closest to the original yellow but with softer edges and the second is definitely darker with more shadows but interesting in its own way.  If you like one more than the or have a suggestion for something completely different please share in the comments below.

What I love about photographers like you is how you know what to take a photo of. I would never think to photograph these things, and yet, they turn out so interesting. Those two shots are very cool. (Do people still use the word ‘cool’? Probably not. Oh well, I do.)

I use ‘cool’ too. 🙂 Thanks for the nice comments! I always have a hard time thinking of good subjects for Macro Monday’s so Ryan and I went out together specifically looking for interesting details. It helped to have his eyes with me.

These are both great; I enjoyed contemplating what they might be before I read your post. I was leaning towards soap or something waxy, so love that I was so wrong.

I wasn’t sure at first what it was but once told, it makes sense! I think I like the second a bit more.

I like the first one as it shows contrast between black dust on the surface and the yellow surface.

I am not familiar with the Phoneography Challenge, but I have given up taking pictures with my phone. I love my camera.

It is so unbelievable the things we might overlook when taking pictures, but turn out to be great photos. The second photo is more interesting to me, even though they are pictures of the same thing. The first one looks plastic, but it has good contrast; and the second one has a waxy, well worn look. Working with photo effects can be a lot of fun.

I appreciate your opinions Rob! The second photo was my favorite but I included both since my family liked the first one better. It is fun to hear just how differently people view the same image. I usually prefer the finished photos from my camera too but lately have been pushing myself to try new things with my phone since it is always in my pocket. Lisa

It’s interesting how for some macros you don;t know what you are looking at until someone tells you, nice subject 🙂
