iPhone Monday 4-14-14

The second Monday of every month is dedicated to Macro at Lens and Pen by Sally’s weekly photo challenge.  We were out-of-town again this weekend and while I took a lot of photos in the Skagit Valley Tulip Fields none of them were macro which left me thinking I might need to skip this week.  Then this morning I read Sally plans to take a nice, long spring vacation and realized this was my last chance to participate in April so here is an up close and personal view of the 2014 Starbucks Siren.

A little history about the Siren from the Starbucks webpage:

“Let’s go all the way back to 1971, to when Starbucks was first coming to be. In a search for a way to capture the seafaring history of coffee and Seattle’s strong seaport roots, there was a lot of poring over old marine books going on. Suddenly, there she was: a 16th century Norse woodcut of a twin-tailed mermaid, or Siren. There was something about her – a seductive mystery mixed with a nautical theme that was exactly what the founders were looking for. A logo was designed around her, and our long relationship with the Siren began.”

I always wondered how she came to be, but I didn’t realize Starbucks has been around that long!

I thought it would be nice to share a little history along with the photo. 🙂 The original brown (and obviously topless) Siren is still used at their Pike Place Market location but the rest of the cafes have the new logo. 😉

Now I know a back story about that VERY familiar symbol. She certainly has had more than her fifteen minutes of fame. Happy Photo Challenge.

And now I know. Starbucks is still to complicated for me. I ask for black tea and they offer me white tea?

I remember that post! This was a basic unsweetened, iced green tea that arrived exactly as I ordered. 🙂

Nice! I’m actually getting better at Starbucks but I still like Peet’s better.

Two years ago when we did our Mediterranean cruise to celebrate our 25th anniversary we were visiting some ruins in Greece and the guide pointed out a relief featuring one of the goddesses (can’t remember which one – nike??) and told us it was the inspiration for the Starbucks logo. Liar!

Reminds me of an old standup comedy bit I saw where the guy said we just buy whatever the tour guides tell us, without question. Like if they said, ” the magnificent palace at Versailles is made completely of cheese!” , we would all probably mid and murmur, “cheese! Fascinating!” 🙂

Totally busted! I wonder how many people have heard his ancient Greek goddess line…

I love that mermaid, actually I like all mermaids. I never knew she was Norse! Glad you posted today.

Thanks Angeline. 🙂 The original logo looks more like a Norse woodcut – her rough edges have smoothed out a little over the years…

I’ve read this story in some of my reading about Starbucks. I love what they’ve done to promote coffee houses and now, more and more, tea houses, too. I like being able to get decent tea in so many places. Peet’s is coming to our area soon and they have a great selection of really good teas. As for Sally being on vacation, what are we going to do????

I’m glad they are including so many nice teas too! Monday’s won’t be the same without Sally. 😦 Maybe we can follow her schedule anyway with a little note saying she’s on vacation. 🙂

I was thinking the same thing. I’d be willing to have everyone put their comments with links on my blog as I’m usually up early and if we’re not doing separate pingbacks, I could have the post go live early. If that sounds good we could mention it to Sally to put on her blog.

Made me smile 🙂 She has a look of the Statue of Liberty. I guess that’s the intention?
