The fourth Monday of every month is Challenger’s Choice at Lens and Pen by Sally and my June selection is night photography. It’s been a whirlwind few days (weeks really) here but last night was a great break from the usual business of home and instead of folding a mountain of laundry I spent the end of the day with my parents at the Chateau St. Michelle Summer Concert Series watching Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and Merle Haggard. I’ll have more concert photos to share in my next 1 Day 1 World post but here is a preview taken during the final song of a fun summer evening listening to music outside under the stars.
Great lineup. I’m jealous.

Sounded like a great concert. Everyone was clapping along except one guy in the photo who looks like he can’t wait for it to be over. What a pity. Music is a lovely thing 🙂

Looking at the photo now I can see how the guy looks tired but actually he was so into the music he didn’t want it to end. 🙂

Looking again at the photo, I think you’re right. He does look tired…but quite enthralled by the band, supporting himself on the chairs in front of him to see out the set 🙂

That concert must have been memorable. Your capture is great. It shows the audience deeply connected to their experience. The gorgeous sky acts as a good backdrop. Happy Photo Challenge.

Thanks, Sally. The sky was beautiful that night and I’m glad I turned around to see how it lit up behind us. Combined with the audience expressions I couldn’t resist taking a few photos. 🙂

This is such a great shot; it really captures the engagement of the audience. I immediately wanted to know what they were applauding. 🙂

Thanks, Sue. :). Their expressions are what makes the shot work for me too, I really liked the range of emotion across the group.

Me too; there is an almost religious fervour in some of the expressions. It made me want to know where they were, what they were experiencing. And of course the gorgeous cobalt sky in the background really adds to the shot visually.

At this point in the concert Merle Haggard was performing his last song of the set and no one wanted the show to end. Some of his band members have been touring with him since 1965 and this night also featured his wife singing back up and his son in guitar. All in all a great evening. The weather was perfect too. 🙂

I love it! I was experimenting with night photography too – the night I was out at a concert it was overcast. I will have to try it again to see if I can get great contrast like you did.

Night shots are tough, I took a lot before finding one I could work with too. 🙂 I’m glad this one works for you!
