How many of us have late night Diner stories ready to share with just a bit of prompting? John and I each have some fun memories of long hours spent with friends in the red vinyl booths of a neighborhood Denny’s. From High School study sessions to after bar closing time in college most of them involve coffee, large quantities of greasy food and groups of laughing friends.
Now that I’m in my 40’s 12:00 am usually finds me in bed but in an effort to think of something original to share for this weeks post we thought it would be an adventure to stay up late with Ryan and show him a peek of what goes on after midnight… It’s funny how the streets that look so familiar at noon take on a different mood 12 hours later and Ryan’s head was turning right and left taking in the sights while asking non-stop questions about how many people were still up and where did we think they were going.
At Denny’s we were lucky enough to get a corner booth and after a long look at the menus everyone settled on chocolate milkshakes and fries. Watching the different tables and trying to eavesdrop was really entertaining and if we couldn’t hear the real words we put our heads together and invented conversations between strangers. The time passed so quickly that midnight was here before I was ready but as luck would have it there was one open stool at the bar looking directly into the kitchen and the neon clock on the wall. I walked over, waited for my moment and snapped a photo capturing the 12:00 am hour.
It’s hard to believe we’ve turned the corner and are starting the second half of this 24 hour project, time sure does fly when you’re having fun. If you have a photo or story to share about your 12:00 am hour I’d love to see it! Please tag your post 1 Day 1 World Project for easy reader searches and/or link your post in a comment below so we can all enjoy the view. Together we’ll build a virtual 24 hour day filled with images from around the world.
If you’re new to the 1 Day 1 World Project please take a look at my introductory post here. This 12:00 am post will remain open for submissions until the end of Saturday, August 2nd and a new post for the 1:00 am hour will open for entries Sunday, August 3rd.

Wonderful! It must be fun being up late that time of the night. The only photo you will see is the lot snoring away and that includes Simba and my hubby. hehehehe. 😀

Bloody well done, Lisa ! I fear that many of us are simply unable to— hang on, I must speak ONLY for myself ! I’m a piker. I’ll never be able to provide another image until we reach … oh, 4:00am to 5:00am, I’d say. Sorry to be so pathetic. 😦

Not pathetic at all, M-R! I’ll look forward to your 4 am photo and am pretty darn sure it will be more interesting than mine. 😉

Fun story. What a memorable evening for your son. Our kids are so used to all-nighters, as we do a lot of long haul driving, that it wouldn’t even raise a thought that being up late was unusual. (Of course I am writing this at 2:50 am as I work on an art project! LOL!)

Wow, being creative at 2:50 am is way beyond anything I am capable of, Deb. 🙂 Ryan had a great time at midnight but I think he will just have to read some of the new posts in order to really experience the hours between 2 and 5 am. Unless I have a budding night owl of my own… well just have to wait and see!

What a cool thing to do and great capture Lisa, that’s a classic shot! American diners are so iconic. Your son must have been thrilled to go there during the night time.
My idea wasn’t a huge success: http://wp.me/pL5Ms-1Lb

I should totally have participated this week. I’m back in Vegas, and the AC is still broken (repair is happening at home as I type this; I am getting a pedicure in an air conditioned salon…). The last two nights have seen us out way later than we’d normally be – anything to minimize the hours in that oven if a condo…
p.s. I have the same late night Denny’s memories from my youth! 🙂

Oh no, I can’t imagine how hot it must be in your Condo after all this time without AC! Late night Denny’s memories are fun with a few years distance between then and now but I’ll admit this trip was a great one too. 🙂

I have stopped at 8. At 9 I try winding down so I could go to bed early. But midnight? I would be in la la land.

Lisa,
Like you, I was not sure what I would do during the hours I am usually asleep. So far each week I have made it into the time that I’m usually asleep. I like the idea of planning something from a time in our lives when we were actually awake during the wee hours of the night. I’m sure your late night at Denney’s will become a fun memory for Ryan. 🙂
Yesterday morning I thought that I had missed the halfway point. But alas, I did not. Here is the link to this weeks post:

After arriving home late at night from a camping adventure, we were in need of milk for a bedtime cup of tea. This story occurred on the way home from the grocery story, and involved the first call I’ve ever made to 911.

Oooo a diner story! Love love love the shot! Being in the theatre when I was in my 20’s we spent a lot of time going out after a show to wind down. It wasn’t always a diner but they always had that “after hours” feel … like you were part of a special group of people. I love that you made up conversations… how fun!

Thanks, Meghan! I know exactly what you mean about the “after hours” feel. It was great fun watching Ryan experience some late night atmosphere for the first time. 🙂
