Introducing the 1 Day 1 World Project

One of the things I enjoy most about this blogging community is the unique opportunity to experience snippets of daily life through someone else’s perspective.  Some of you record and share these moments through photography while others paint pictures with your words but regardless of the format I always enjoy the time I spend looking through your eyes.  I started this blog as a project to share little views from my corner of the world and discovering this vibrant, global community of creative thinkers who share this sentiment has been a gift.  Through my friends here I can armchair travel through several countries, sit in a sidewalk cafe, visit a museum, read a humorous/sad/insightful post and fill a note pad with new ideas while thinking about the next photo of the Pacific Northwest I want to share in return.

One of my note pad ideas is a 1 Day 1 World project designed to capture daily life moments, one hour at a time, until we reach a full day.  The format is structured like the television show 24 with each hour of the day having its own week and running for a total of 24 weeks from May through October.  During these six months the Northern Hemisphere will transition from spring to fall while the Southern Hemisphere moves from fall to spring and with enough participation not only will we view a virtual 24 hour day we can also experience each of the four seasons through our global community.

I’m up for posting one hour from my day each week but the project will really only come to life if you join me.  I know many of you enjoy photography while others expertly capture moments with a few, well-crafted sentences and I think this format can work well for all of us but if you’re still unsure about how to go forward I have a few ideas below.

  • If you attend an event, movie or kids game how about a quick description of where you are or a photograph of a ticket stub.
  • A nice dinner out or coffee with a friend could be captured by a photo from your table, a review of your favorite restaurant or maybe story about how you discovered this place.
  • Describing where you are at one brief minute during the hour – waiting in line, sitting in your office or standing in the kitchen wondering if you should clean it or walk away and read a book.

I know some of the hours will be difficult to capture but this is a no-pressure kind of project and I want it to be as fun to read as it is to participate.  If you’re an early morning kind of person and don’t have something to share from 2 am  please stop by anyway and visit those night owls who find this time of day their most creative.  Your prime time will come soon and a sunrise moment might be just as interesting and rare to them as their midnight sessions are to you.

Our first hour will be 12:00 pm and you have the next week to think about it before the project opens on May 3rd.  I’ll schedule my new posts to publish early Sunday mornings, Pacific Standard Time, and they will remain active until the following Sunday for comments and links back to your posts.

Please let me know what you think in the comments below.  Does this kind of project interest you and would you check in to read other’s posts?  Ultimately, I want this to be a fun and creative community space to share our views through a day and the more the merrier!

Will we each be assigned a specific hour of the day?

I think it will be easiest if everyone participates in each hour they want. Next Sunday I will post something from the 12:00 hour and you can do the same, linking to my 12:00 post so we can all see your too. Sorry if I confused you – let me know if I can help clear up any questions. 🙂

Lisa, this is a very, very cool idea. I’m still not sure I completely understand the logistics, but that’s probably got more to do with my fried brain from 3+ hours blog-writing than your description. I’ll watch for how this rolls out and would love to participate once I “get it”. 🙂

I hope you jump in Nancy, I was thinking of blogs like yours when I wrote this because I want everybody to have a chance to contribute. 🙂 To start the first week everyone can post their 12:00 “hour” starting Sunday May 3rd and then the second hour (1:00 pm) will be posted in the second week of May starting on the 10th. Now go rest your fingers because 3+ hours of blog writing shows some serious dedication!!!

Thanks for asking this one Livonne, a post showing the 12 hour in your time from any day during the week leading up to May 3rd will be great so we can all compare apples to apples and see what noon (then 1, 2, 3…) looks like around the world. I know the time difference will be a little challenge when it comes to linking your posts every Sunday but I’ll try to get mine up as early as I can!

    Like

The hours were usually asleep are going to be the tricky part of this project, Amanda… I’ll still have something to post and am thinking about ideas now. Maybe I’ll stage something in advance and set my alarm to take a photo at the right hour or possibly write something about an event that happened. A local news story would work too – it’s time for creativity. 🙂

Sounds interesting. I am trying to work it out, do we post a picture every hour for a 24 hour period ? So a 12 noon picture, then a 1 pm picture, then a 2 pm picture, etc.? Do we post the images on our own blogs then link it in the comments to your blog? Perhaps I am missing something as I am reading, making bread and sanding buttons all at the same time. It sounds interesting for sure.

Starting Saturday, 3rd of May, 12 pm (that is midday, isn’t it?) and then continuing the week after with Saturday, 10th of May, 1 pm, and so on? This sounds very interesting Lisa, I have a couple of books “A Day in the LIfe” that capture people’s photos throughout 24 hours. Night workers capture what is happening to them whilst the rest of us sleep, and there are photos of babies being born etc. I will try and join in as and when I can, but midnight to 6 am might be a real challenge!!

Thanks so much Jude, I’ve always been interested in the “Day in the Life” style of books too! Then you write your post and link it to mine which I will post early Sunday morning. The 12:00 post will remain open for links until the following Saturday, then the new week will continue with photos/stories about the 1 – 2 pm hour. Lisa,
As I have thought about this 1 Day 1 World Project you are staring within the blogging community, which I’m excited about, I have been thinking about how the posts would be titled. One idea I have been tossing about is to follow the pattern of my “Choosing To Be Happy” series format. Then I started to think that if each member of this Project used the same title it would be really cool. I think your existing name followed by a hyphen and the “Day 1” would tie the community together. For example:

        1 Day 1 World Project – Day 1

Just a thought. This may already be somewhere in all the information posted so far.
        Patrick.

        Patrick,
A title format similar to what you use for your “Choosing To Be Happy” series is exactly what I was thinking too, thanks for noting it here. 🙂 I plan to title my posts 1 Day 1 World Project – Hour 1, followed by Hour 2, etc. I’ll try to write another post highlighting some of the great questions in these comments for a quick reference to the most frequently asked questions.
